Pura Vida! My name is Kamiyah Anglin, and I am from Mexia, TX. I study Biology, with a minor in chemistry and health, at the illustrious Prairie View A&M University. I went on the Summer in Costa Rica- Spanish for Health Professionals Program. I chose CIS Abroad because they had a program that aligned with my goals as an aspiring physical therapist. I had the chance to immerse myself in a different culture while exploring the foundational aspects of physical therapy, its history, and the application of mechanical principles to the human body.
Arrival and Meeting my Host Mom
Day 1 was great. One, because I did not miss my flight and two because I made it through the airport madness. My suitcase was 63 pounds! However, an airport employee was nice enough to help me get the weight down and I was lucky that I had extra bags in my suitcase. I was so excited to get my first stamp in my passport.
Once I landed in Costa Rica, I went to an airport restaurant to meet up with other CIS Abroad students to wait for our on-site director to pick us up and take us to our homestays. On the drive, our site director showed us parks we could go to and the university we would be taking classes at. She also gave us advice to keep us safe if we ever get lost walking in the city. Once I arrived at my homestay, I was amazed by how beautiful the home was and the view of the city from the driveway. My host mom informed me that she would not be home once I arrived, but once I met her, she was so nice and willing to talk about anything.
My host mom spoke English and Spanish, unlike most host moms in the program, because she was originally from the states. Five of us from the program were staying with Kathy and somehow I still got my own room and the room in the house with a private bathroom, which I shared with one of my other roommates.
A Learning Opportunity
On day 2, our site director informed us that we would be going to the mall after coffee tour. We went to the mall to convert cash and get a sims card if interested. I was not aware that my phone was locked until moments before walking into the phone store. However, I was able to convert the cash I had. One thing I will say, do not convert all of your cash because it did come to times where American money was taken or needed. Throughout the entire trip, I had to make sure to communicate my limitations with the group or person I was traveling with. Whenever I got the courage to explore on my own, I ensured that the places I visited had Wi-Fi, so I could get an Uber back home or I made sure the place was within walking distance. Planning efficiently boosted my confidence. Additionally, I would inform a roommate of my plans whenever I ventured out alone, so they could check on me. In the end, I was able to fully immerse myself in the experience while staying safe.
Living My Best Life
This was my favorite outfit while I was there. All of the items I am wearing are from shops in Costa Rica from the sunglasses to the bag. My favorite dish was Sopas Azteca and my favorite beverage was Cas. Cas is only grown in Costa Rica and it was delicious. During my time in Costa Rica, I traveled to Limón and Monteverde. Now I get to say I went on a night hike, I zip-lined, kayaked, laid on the beach, and attended dance classes in Costa Rica! I did all of this while going to classes from nine in the morning to three in the afternoon. If you are unsure about traveling out of the country to study, my advice is to buy that plane ticket and make new memories. Pura vida!
