A Sustainable Summer in Sorrento, Italy

Hi, I'm Ciera Collier, an Industrial and Operations Engineering major at the University of Michigan. As part of my summer internship through CIS Abroad, I had the amazing opportunity to work with Wherever Tours LLC in the stunning coastal town of Sorrento, Italy.

Based out of Villa Giovanna, a picturesque estate perched on the cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Naples, I was involved in a travel company specializing in luxury group tours with a focus on sustainable tourism. This micro-credential not only allowed me to apply my engineering skills in a real-world setting but also gave me valuable insights into the global business landscape.

Daily Tasks

One of the aspects I appreciated most during my time here was the company’s commitment to sustainability. From the villa’s garden, which provided locally sourced ingredients for our meals, to the use of eco-friendly materials like paper cups and straws, Wherever Tours took meaningful steps to protect the local environment. This focus on sustainability was crucial, given our proximity to the sea, where plastic waste can significantly impact marine life.

My daily responsibilities varied, but every task connected back to ensuring our clients had a memorable, luxurious, and environmentally conscious travel experience. I assisted in coordinating tours, curating itineraries that featured authentic Italian experiences and even helped with marketing strategies aimed at promoting the company’s sustainable travel ethos.

Skills and Takeaways

This internship helped me develop several core competencies that will be valuable in my future career, especially as I pursue entrepreneurship. I gained experience in sustainable business practices, learned how to effectively market a company’s mission, and developed a deeper understanding of managing luxury tours. Working in a multicultural environment improved my communication and problem-solving skills as I collaborated with colleagues from various backgrounds.

One of my greatest successes was leading a rebranding initiative that significantly enhanced client engagement. This achievement boosted my confidence and demonstrated the impact of strategic planning. Conversely, a challenge I faced was navigating communication barriers while working remotely, but it taught me the importance of adaptability and proactive problem-solving.

Advice for Future Interns

For future interns, I have a few key pieces of advice. First, immerse yourself in the industry you're working in. Dive deep into the work and make an effort to understand the broader context of the company’s operations. Second, don’t be afraid to ask questions. My boss frequently praised me for being inquisitive and hardworking, which set me apart from many other interns. Asking questions not only shows your eagerness to learn but also helps you grasp complex concepts more quickly.

Additionally, try your personal best in every task you undertake. Your dedication and enthusiasm will be noticed and valued. Taking initiative and demonstrating a strong work ethic can lead to meaningful contributions and opportunities for growth.

Lastly, engage actively with the team and the local environment. Building relationships and gaining insights from those around you can greatly enhance your experience and effectiveness.

Thank you to everyone at Wherever Tours and CIS Abroad for making this summer so rewarding!
