My name is Roma Carter and I am a media studies major at the University of Tulsa. I went on the Semester in Thailand program in Spring 2025. I chose CIS Abroad because of the abundance of excursions they take students on!
One of my favorite classes at Mahidol University in Thailand was Mind and Body, a yoga class! We met once a week in a multi-purpose classroom for 2 hours. I learned so much about the body, breathwork techniques, stretching and meditation. My professor was the model in the yoga booklet, so when I look back at the booklet and reminisce on the class I get to see my sweet professor and hear her voice encouraging me to stretch further. Even when I think I am extended as far as possible she never failed to show me I could go farther.
Another one of my favorite classes was Conflict War and Peace. It was a lecture and debate-based course where we discussed difficult but important topics on civilian causalities in war, blurred identities, the theory of new wars and much more. The professor was an investigative journalist who previously reported on the Cambodian Khmer Rouge regime and offered immensely insightful firsthand experience about the tragedy of wartime.
This class was not easy by any means, but it expanded my knowledge on international conflict in a way that schools in the U.S. never have. The professor and debates we would have in the class emboldened me to use my voice and personal experience as an international student to give insight on what international affairs looks like outside of Thailand and the students seemed interested in a American’s perspective.

I also highly recommend taking Intro to Thai Language and Culture. Thai is a completely different and unique language from English, and in this class you learn so much Thai along with cultural knowledge that is so useful to know outside of the classroom setting. The professor was so kind, patient and passionate in teaching international students about the language and Thai way of life.
