The Barcelona Micro-Credential Experience

Written by CIS Abroad Blog Team | Feb 26, 2025 6:48:02 PM

Experience is something that can only be appreciated and respected. On this trip to Barcelona, I have gained immeasurable experience through simple activities like eating, talking, and viewing life in a completely new way. Concluding my study abroad experience, I have nothing but love and appreciation for the city I was fortunate enough to live in for two months. The program I participated in was incredible, opening me up to new experiences and allowing me to meet people who have become great friends. Everyone in my program was enjoyable and interesting, from my site director and her staff to the other students and interns. I can safely say that I have not had one bad day in Barcelona, and I believe part of that comes from the well-organized and easygoing nature of the program, as well as the wonderful people involved in it.

Who am I and why do I value Micro-Credentials?

I am James Russo, a senior at Boise State University. My major is Games, Interactive Media, and Mobile Design. I came to Barcelona seeking a new experience and a greater sense of cultural awareness. In a highly competitive job market that requires me to stand out significantly, I believe the micro-credential is a perfect fit. It allows me to distinguish myself with proven cultural awareness, which is crucial when seeking a job at an international company. I first heard about this credential through my site director and then through emails. I couldn't be more grateful for the introduction as I know it’ll give me an edge to be able to stand above most. I would tell anyone abroad to make sure they get theirs as it is so easy to achieve.

Barcelona was nothing short of amazing. The strong cultures of Spain and Catalunya enriched my experience, allowing me to appreciate aspects of life I previously overlooked. The city's pride is evident in its cleanliness and innovation. The locals are equally prideful about their home, ensuring that no part of their culture fades away, which I deeply respect. Every day, waking up in such a beautiful city and walking to LCI Barcelona was a joy. The ability to stroll through picturesque streets, discovering a new coffee shop each morning, filled me with happiness. Practicing Spanish with the incredibly patient locals made me so grateful for their kindness and willingness to help me learn. Barcelona's eating culture added to the charm. While the city is known for its vibrant nightlife, it’s the food that truly brings people together. Whether it was a simple meal at a local restaurant or trying different delicacies, the importance of food in fostering communication, laughter, and love was evident.

LCI Barcelona, my university, exceeded all my expectations. The professors were  amazing—knowledgeable, supportive, and inspiring. The university itself was incredibly innovative, offering cutting-edge facilities and a progressive approach to education. I never would have imagined finding such a forward-thinking institution here, and it played a significant role in making my experience extraordinary. Overall, the combination of the city's beauty, the wonderful food, the welcoming people, and the daily experiences made my time in Barcelona unforgettable.

What skills did you learn?

I believe I have grown in many ways during my time abroad. The most significant change is my newfound comfort with being on my own and enjoying my own company. While I still love experiencing things with others, learning to enjoy my own company is extremely important. It allows me to pursue my own interests without worrying about others' preferences. Another valuable skill I've developed is the ability to live in the present. By distancing myself from the concerns back home, such as judgment from others or overthinking the future, I have learned to appreciate the present moment. Being in Barcelona has allowed me to simply enjoy being outside, savoring where I am in life, what I am eating, drinking, and experiencing.

What advice would I give to future students?

There is no other way to say it: take this journey. The experiences you gain here are second to none and will stay with you for the rest of your life. Whether it's through the places you see, the food you eat, or the wonderful people you meet, I can confidently say there has been no better decision in my life than choosing to do this. I remember how worried I was about the distance from home, but I am so thankful I went through with it. For those considering this trip, keep your preferences in mind. If temperature matters to you, plan accordingly, as it can significantly impact your experience. The same goes for food preferences—know what you like and don’t like. Remember to have patience and be open-minded to the amazing experiences you'll have if you allow yourself to embrace them. Be smart and use common sense when going to another country. Be open to the new culture you will be introduced to; being homesick is natural. I came on this trip alone until I found others and was able to enjoy my time much more once I found familiar faces and new ones as well. So, I would say, don’t be afraid to meet new people and stop worrying about the little things that don’t matter in life.

A True Success

I can safely say there have been no failures during this experience, only successes. I will be flying home knowing that I made some incredible friends whom I will hold dear, hopefully throughout my life. I have learned so much about the culture and language through my amazing professors and friends that I made here. Barcelona was nothing but amazing to me, and I recommend that everyone who has the opportunity should go and spend time here. However, always be smart and cautious by using common sense. There is so much out there in the world for people to experience, and I believe there is a place out there for everyone. I want to thank CIS Abroad and my site director, Nicole, and her staff again for the amazing experience and truly unforgettable memories this summer.
