Myth #1: I can’t afford to study abroad.

Studying abroad can be expensive, but there are several ways to mitigate the costs and make them affordable for you.

CIS Abroad has several affordable programs, ranging from 2-17 weeks in length. Shorter programs, have a relatively low upfront cost — one of the shortest programs CIS Abroad offers, is January in Tokyo at J.F. Oberlin University (2 weeks in length).  It's also worth noting that program fees include tuition and fees, housing, insurance, support, services, and many other costs that quickly add up on their own.

Shorter programs have a lower cost upfront, but doing a longer program can actually get you a much lower weekly cost. The Semester In Seoul – Sogang University program is 17 weeks long and includes the same perks mentioned before and even some extra inclusions unique to the program. The weekly cost for this program is about $750, much lower than a 2-week program. This is often comparable or even cheaper than a semester at your home university!

In addition to selecting affordable programs, there are several scholarships you can apply for through CIS Abroad and externally. Many scholarships award up to $500, such as the Global Content Creator and Academic Merit scholarship. One of the newest scholarships is the Palm Entrepreneurship Scholarship, which awards up to $5,000. Along with CIS Abroad’s scholarships, many external scholarships can also be applied to your program’s tuition from organizations such as GoOverseas and Diversity Abroad.

Myth #3: I can’t take a whole semester away from campus, so I can’t study abroad.

CIS Abroad offers a number of shorter programs like January, Maymester, and Summer programs. These programs can range anywhere from 2-12 weeks studying abroad.

Myth #4: I identify as LGBTQIA+, so I won’t feel safe while abroad.

CIS Abroad has a number of programs in countries that are safe for LGBTQIA+ students, such as Scotland, Italy, and Australia. To find these programs, use CIS Abroad’s program finder with the filter “LGBTQIA+ Friendly." You can view more resources and info on the CIS Abroad website here.

Myth #5: People only study abroad in Europe.

While Europe is a popular study abroad destination, it is not the only option. CIS Abroad offers several programs in Asia, Central America, and Australia. When using the CIS Abroad Program Finder, use the filters to see which countries CIS Abroad offers programs in. Just a few examples are:
