How Barcelona Made Me More Me

Written by CIS Abroad Blog Team | Jan 16, 2026 4:30:41 PM

Small parts of Barcelona changed me in small ways, big ways, and even in ways I didn’t recognize in the moment. The culture, the music, the creativity, and the free-spirited nature of the people here have shaped how I view the world and myself. With the help of Barcelona’s culture, its people, and this micro-credential, being here has made me more certain of who I am and how I want to live my own life, and I believe it will impact me long after I leave. Two major aspects of my time in Barcelona have left a lasting impression on me: the art that fills the city and the outdoor lifestyle that has pushed me to explore, move, and live more freely.

The Talent, Art, and Creativity

It seems like everyone here, on every corner and metro ride, is an artist. Barcelona, to me, is the heart of singers, dancers, painters, graffiti artists, fashion choices, musicians, and more. When I explore the city, it is almost guaranteed that I will hear the most beautiful violinist or captivating singer, or see the most exciting dances and detailed graffiti, or find people who use their physical appearance to express their identity. The cultures here, and people’s ability to share their talent with anyone fortunate enough to listen, are inspirational.

I have always been a creative person—not in singing or instruments, but in small projects and personal items for the people I know. Being in Barcelona, I discovered the city's legal graffiti walls. I have gone with my friends and by myself to create whatever I want. The pieces aren’t very good, but it is something I find myself enjoying. It’s not something I would have thought of or been able to do back home. I have done graffiti, gone skating, painted, and, in general, expressed myself more creatively since being here.

I have also always loved photography. Mainly, I’ve done sports photography or created small vlogs with my friends and family that I filmed and edited. In Barcelona, I explored different styles of photography and expanded my knowledge of the culture and people through it. Photography and videography are my favorite forms of creativity, and I have taken every opportunity to work on them since being here. I find it much easier to do so when everyone around me is constantly showcasing their creativity, too.

The Outdoor Living

I have never been much of an outdoorsy person. I am now. Barcelona is a place where being outside feels effortless. There is a lot to do, it does not get boring, and there is always something new to do or see. The beaches, open plazas, hikes, festivals, walkable destinations, and great weather always give me a reason to go out. The social community and culture are inviting in a way that feels comfortable rather than forced. Being in Barcelona has made me enjoy hiking, exploring, and nature more and more.

Since being here, I have walked longer distances than I used to, gone on more hikes, and walked on the beach just to pass the time in nature. It is refreshing and natural, and it is a part of myself that I am grateful to have discovered.

Any place I go will change me in some way. I could not be more grateful that I chose Barcelona to be the place that changed me during this semester. As I prepare to leave, I will carry what I learned from Barcelona and my micro-credential with me, and continue exploring my creativity and new love for exploration. I will sadly leave Barcelona, but I will always be grateful for the amazing people I met and the culture I was able to experience so closely.
