The Forum’s 16th Annual Conference will now be offered in a virtual conference format on April 21-23, 2020. Here at CIS Abroad we are working hard to offer engaging virtual sessions and a virtual booth experience. We are truly looking forward to learning and exploring this new virtual way of connecting with our colleagues old and new!
Below you can see a summary of the critical dialogue and conference sessions that CIS Abroad staff are facilitating and presenting with colleagues. Attendees will be able to access conference session recordings and the virtual exhibit hall for 90 days after the event.
We hope to “see” you there at this virtual conference!
U.S. Higher Education today is framed by sustained attention to misogyny, sexual harassment and survivors of sexual violence. As a result, college-aged women (and men) in the U.S. are encouraged and increasingly empowered to speak up about these issues when they encounter them on campus or in the workplace. What happens when these same students encounter cultural norms and traditions abroad that clash with their expectations and values, and seem to promote gender inequality? How do we as educators prepare students to interpret and respond to gender inequality in their host community, as well as a plethora of other issues facing women around the world, including racism, educational and economic inequality, restrictions on reproductive freedom, and the impact of climate change?
Facilitators:
Learn about this innovative five-part online and on-campus workshop series to prepare faculty to take their classroom abroad. Participants will learn how faculty, the education abroad office, and partner organizations can work together to align academic goals with best practices and campus resources, and spend time discussing and designing a series to meet their own institution’s needs.
Presenters:
This session will explore first-year study abroad programming and review the learning outcomes achieved by participants. Using Astin’s and Kolb’s theories as frameworks for student engagement, the panel will discuss how first-year education abroad programming has served as a springboard to a successful undergraduate experience, how it has ignited a passion for future study abroad, and how participants have encouraged their peers to engage in similar experiences.
Presenters:
The Forum on Education Abroad updated its Guidelines on Education Abroad Advising in 2019, which expands upon the guidance set forth in the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad. This session will provide a theoretical overview of the publication, as well as a deep dive into case studies that highlight best practices for applying these guidelines in real world settings.
